The poet Wilfred Owen was among thousands stationed in the city during the First World War and the Laver Banks site played a pioneering role in military bridges.</p><p><br></p><p>The military band and troops march past the Cathedral towards the Market Square for the presentation of the Freedom of the City to the Corps of the Royal Engineers on 27 July 1949. The Freedom of the City gives the military the ability to enter the City, drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed.</p><p><br></p><p>Royal Air Force Ripon was a First World War airfield maintained by the Royal Flying Corps in the city of Ripon, North Yorkshire, England.
