Raids on Manchester

Air raids began in August 1940, and in September 1940 the Palace Theatre on Oxford Street was hit. The heaviest raids occurred on the nights of 22/23 and 23/24 December 1940, killing an estimated 684 people and injuring more than 2,000.



Royal Air Force Ringway or more simply RAF Ringway is a former Royal Air Force satellite station in Ringway, Cheshire, England, near Manchester. It was operational from 1939 until 1957. The site of the station is now occupied by Manchester Airport.



During the Second World War the 2nd, 5th and 9th Manchesters formed part of the British Expeditionary Force in 1939/40 and got involved in the Dunkirk evacuation. The 2nd subsequently fought in the Burma campaign.
