<p>Raids on Manchester</p><p> Air raids began in August 1940, and in September 1940 the Palace Theatre on Oxford Street was hit. The heaviest raids occurred on the nights of 22/23 and 23/24 December 1940, killing an estimated 684 people and injuring more than 2,000.</p><p><br></p><p>Royal Air Force Ringway or more simply RAF Ringway is a former Royal Air Force satellite station in Ringway, Cheshire, England, near Manchester. It was operational from 1939 until 1957. The site of the station is now occupied by Manchester Airport.</p><p><br></p><p>During the Second World War the 2nd, 5th and 9th Manchesters formed part of the British Expeditionary Force in 1939/40 and got involved in the Dunkirk evacuation. The 2nd subsequently fought in the Burma campaign.</p>
