<p>On the night of August 31st 1940 Bradford was bombed by the Luftwaffe. 116 bombs hit roads and buildings between Thornton Road and eastwards to Leeds road. The Lingards department store was hit on the junction of Kirkgate and Westgate in the city centre. On March 14th 1941 more Nazi bombers flew over Bradford.</p><p><br></p><p>The 1st Battalion of Bradford Pals was the lead Battalion at the fortified town of Serre. By the end of the first day 527 men were killed or wounded.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>
