🎙️ Digital Literacy, Online Safety, Freedom of Expression & the Future of Social Media
I recently had the opportunity to join Richard Spurr to discuss the growing debate surrounding the UK Government's proposed social media restrictions for under-16s, alongside recent public comments from Elon Musk regarding online regulation, privacy, censorship and freedom of expression.
This discussion is about much more than social media. It is about the future relationship between technology, government, education, families and society itself.
As policymakers consider stronger online protections for young people, several important questions emerge:
• How do we protect children and young people from genuine online harms?
• How do we preserve privacy, civil liberties, and freedom of expression?
• What role should parents, educators, governments and technology companies play?
• Are we building a digitally resilient generation, or simply delaying exposure to the realities of the online world?
My perspective is that this should not be viewed as a binary choice between safety and freedom.
The most effective long-term approach requires balance.
A sustainable digital future should include:
✅ Strong online safety measures
✅ Comprehensive digital literacy education
✅ Greater parental support and engagement
✅ Transparent platform accountability
✅ Protection of privacy and fundamental rights
The reality is that technology is now embedded within education, employment, entrepreneurship, media and everyday life.
Young people are not simply consuming digital platforms they are increasingly learning, creating, networking, building businesses, and shaping their futures through them.
This is why digital literacy should be treated as a core life skill, alongside reading, writing, communication and critical thinking.
The challenge facing governments, technology leaders, educators and families is not simply determining who can access technology.
The challenge is ensuring people have the knowledge, skills, judgment and support to engage with it safely, responsibly and successfully.
A Question for Policymakers, Industry Leaders, Educators, Creators, Talent Agents, and Parents:
As we shape the future of digital society, what should take priority?
🔹 Stronger regulation?
🔹 Digital education?
🔹 Parental responsibility?
🔹 Platform accountability?
🔹 Or a balanced combination of all four?
I would welcome perspectives from leaders across technology, education, media, public policy, talent management and the creator economy.
The future of online safety will not be determined by bans alone.
It will be determined by how effectively we educate, empower and protect the next generation while preserving the freedoms that underpin open and democratic societies.
