Rock bands have been lifting occult imagery for decades, but has any of them actually practiced the occult? From Levi’s Baphomet, inverted crosses, pentagrams, demons, Crowley & Thelema references, everyone knows the look by now. A lot of the time it’s basically stage dressing. It makes the band seem darker, evil, mystical, holding secrets of the universe, giving their music some menace, and gives fans something to pick apart or dig into without any actual context.

Zeppelin lands much differently to most, and gives a more credible correlation with the occult. The Crowley connection, the symbols, the album art, the Page rumours, and more; all of that sticks to them in a way it doesn’t with most bands. “Stairway to Heaven” gets dragged into it too, maybe more than it deserves, but that is part of the point, do you know what it’s about? I think I might. The myth around the band has swallowed the music and the symbols together.

Zeppelin obviously weren’t practicing magicians, rosicrucians, Thelema practitioners or Golden Dawn magicians in some grand or extreme sense, and every reference doesn’t have to be that deep, even if it is surface level, even if we know that there are strong connections. But the occult thread is stuck to their reputation now. You can hear the band without caring about any of it, but you can’t really talk about their myth without it. It’s their Great Work in alchemy and the Occult that is in their music.

This will go over Led Zeppelin, their genuine correlations and connections with the occult, and further interpretation.
