Then and now: the amazing story of how a windswept airfield on the Lizard was used by legendary inventor Sir Barnes Wallis (he of bouncing bomb Dambusters fame).

Wallis was researching designs to acheive supersonic flight in the 1950s – he imagined flying direct to Australia in just five hours.

At Predannack Airfield, the remains of his test site remain to this day, overgrown and now a nature reserve - and the Royal Navy airfield is still used for the latest technological research by our own 700X Naval Air Squadron.

Predannack itself has a fascinating history as a Second World War fighter and bomber base – the size of the runways is staggering.

There is no public access to Predannack as the airfield is used daily, including firefighting training and Merlin helicopter training.
